Oil change intervals at a glance
| Vehicle | Change engine oil every (whichever comes first) |
|---|---|
| Petrol car | 10,000 km or 12 months |
| Diesel car | 10,000 km or 12 months |
| CNG car | 7,500 km or 12 months |
| Hybrid car | 10,000 km or 12 months |
| Motorcycle | 5,000 km or 12 months |
| Scooter | 6,000 km or 12 months |
| Electric car, bike or scooter | No engine oil |
These are the intervals the MotorBabu app uses, taken from published Indian schedules (Maruti, Hyundai, Honda and others) — a sensible middle where makers differ. Your owner's manual has the final word, especially for the very first service on a new vehicle, which usually comes much earlier.
When to change it sooner
Manuals often list a "severe" schedule for conditions most Indian drivers know well:
- Stop-and-go city traffic and long idling
- Lots of short trips where the engine never fully warms up
- Dusty or unpaved roads
- Towing, heavy loads, or hard riding
If that's your normal driving, change the oil a little earlier than the standard interval.
Signs your engine oil is overdue
- The oil on the dipstick is dark and gritty, or below the minimum mark
- A louder, ticking or rougher-sounding engine
- The oil pressure or "check engine" warning light comes on
- A burning smell, or blue-grey smoke from the exhaust
- Worse mileage — track it with the mileage calculator
Remember it without trying
In MotorBabu, tick "Engine Oil" when you log a service and it tracks both the km and the months for you — then reminds you before the next change is due, along with everything else on your vehicle.
Questions people ask
How often should I change engine oil in my car?
Roughly every 10,000 km or 12 months for petrol and diesel cars, and 7,500 km for CNG cars — whichever comes first. Check your owner's manual: some modern cars allow longer intervals with synthetic oil.
How often should I change bike engine oil?
Around every 5,000 km or once a year for motorcycles, and about 6,000 km for scooters. Royal Enfield and other bikes with bigger engines often specify their own interval — your manual comes first.
Does engine oil expire if I don't drive much?
Yes. Oil breaks down with time and short trips too, which is why intervals say 'or 12 months'. A car that does 5,000 km a year still needs a yearly oil change.
Should I change the oil filter too?
Yes — change the oil filter with every oil change. A clogged filter lets dirty oil bypass it.
Synthetic or mineral oil?
Use the grade and type in your owner's manual. Synthetic oil lasts longer and protects better, but only stretch intervals if the manufacturer allows it.
