Mileage calculator
Find your vehicle's real mileage in km per litre — and what every kilometre costs you. Works for cars, bikes and scooters, petrol, diesel or CNG.
How to measure your real mileage
The most accurate way is the full tank to full tank method — the same one MotorBabu's fuel log uses:
- Fill the tank completely and note the odometer reading.
- Drive normally — a few days of your usual mix of city and highway.
- Fill it completely again, ideally at the same pump, and note the litres and the new reading.
- Mileage = kilometres driven ÷ litres filled the second time.
One fill tells you that week's mileage; the average over several fills tells you the real figure. A sudden drop is often the first sign something needs attention.
Why your mileage drops — and what helps
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Low tyre pressure | Check it every two weeks, when the tyres are cold. |
| Clogged air filter, old engine oil or spark plug | Keep to the service schedule — our service due calculator tells you when. |
| Hard acceleration and braking | Smooth driving in the right gear can make a visible difference. |
| Idling in traffic | Switch off at long signals if your vehicle allows it. |
| AC, extra load, roof carriers | Use AC sensibly and remove what you don't need. |
| Dragging brakes or a loose chain (bikes) | Get them checked at the next service. |
Track it without the maths
In the MotorBabu app, log each fill at the pump — the amount is enough. It works out your mileage from full tank to full tank, shows your average, and adds fuel, services and insurance into one cost per kilometre.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my bike's mileage?
Fill the tank full, note the odometer reading, ride normally, then fill it full again at the same pump. Mileage = kilometres ridden ÷ litres filled the second time. Enter both readings and the litres above.
What is a good mileage?
It depends on the vehicle: a 100–125 cc commuter bike often gives 50–70 km/l, a scooter 40–55 km/l, a hatchback 15–20 km/l and an SUV 10–15 km/l in real driving. Compare against your own earlier fills — a sudden drop usually means it's due for a service or the tyres need air.
Why is my mileage lower than the company figure?
The figure in brochures (ARAI) is measured in a lab on a fixed test cycle. City traffic, short trips, AC use, tyre pressure, load and riding style all lower real mileage, so a gap is normal.
How do I convert km/l to litres per 100 km?
Divide 100 by the km/l figure. For example, 16 km/l = 100 ÷ 16 = 6.25 litres per 100 km. The calculator shows both.
How is CNG mileage measured?
In kilometres per kilogram (km/kg), because CNG is sold by weight. Choose CNG in the calculator and enter the kilograms filled.
