How to check your vehicle insurance expiry date

Driving without valid motor insurance is illegal and expensive — and a lapsed policy loses your no-claim bonus. Here are four ways to find your expiry date in a minute.

1. Look at your policy

The policy schedule (the PDF or paper from your insurer) shows the period of insurance — "from" and "to" dates — on the first page. The renewal reminders from your insurer use the same date.

2. Parivahan website (VAHAN)

  1. Open the Parivahan Sewa website and go to Informational Services → Know Your Vehicle Details.
  2. Sign in with your mobile number (OTP).
  3. Enter your registration number and the captcha, and search.
  4. You'll see the insurer, the insurance valid-till date and the PUC date.

3. mParivahan app

The government's mParivahan app (Android and iPhone) shows the same VAHAN record — search your registration number, or add your RC to "My RC" to see insurance and PUC validity any time.

4. Insurance Information Bureau (IIB)

The IIB, set up by the insurance regulator, has an online lookup for a vehicle's insurance history. It can ask for more details (mobile number, email) and is most useful after an accident to check another vehicle's cover.

Just renewed? A new policy can take time to show online. Keep the policy PDF until it does — and if the dates online look wrong, contact your insurer to update the record.

Don't let it lapse

Get reminded automatically

Add your vehicle to MotorBabu by its number plate — it reads your insurance and PUC dates from the registration records, reminds you before they expire (on WhatsApp too, if you like), keeps the policy PDF on your phone for offline access, and picks up the new date automatically after you renew.

Questions people ask

Can I check insurance expiry by vehicle number?

Yes. Enter your registration number on the Parivahan website (Know Your Vehicle Details) or in the mParivahan app — both show the insurer and the insurance valid-till date from the VAHAN records.

Why doesn't my new policy show online?

Insurers upload policies to the records, which can take a while for a just-renewed policy. Keep your policy PDF handy until the new date shows up.

What is the fine for driving without insurance?

₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months' jail for a first offence and ₹4,000 for a repeat, under Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Is there a grace period after insurance expires?

No grace period for cover — the day after expiry you're uninsured. Insurers may still let you renew without a fresh inspection for a short time, and your no-claim bonus is usually kept if you renew within 90 days, but you're not covered in between.

Do I need comprehensive insurance?

Third-party insurance is the legal minimum. Comprehensive (own damage + third party) also covers damage to your own vehicle — worth it for most newer vehicles.
