Fuel cost calculator
How much will this trip — or your daily commute — cost in fuel? Enter the distance, your vehicle's mileage and today's price at your pump.
The formula
Fuel cost = distance ÷ mileage × price per litre. The result is only as good as the mileage you put in — use your vehicle's real figure, not the brochure one. Highway driving at a steady speed usually gives better mileage than city traffic, so for a long trip your highway mileage is the better number.
Ways to spend less on fuel
- Keep the tyres at the right pressure — under-inflated tyres quietly eat fuel.
- Service on time — old engine oil, a dirty air filter or a worn spark plug all cost mileage.
- Drive smoothly — gentle acceleration and the right gear matter more than top speed.
- Track your real mileage — a sudden drop is an early warning that something needs a look.
Know your running costs every month
The MotorBabu app keeps a fuel log with your real mileage, and adds fuel, services and insurance into one number for the month and the year — with your cost per kilometre.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Fuel cost = distance ÷ mileage × fuel price. For a 300 km trip in a car that gives 15 km/l with petrol at ₹105 a litre: 300 ÷ 15 = 20 litres, × ₹105 = ₹2,100.
How do I find my vehicle's real mileage?
Use the full-tank-to-full-tank method: fill up completely, drive, fill up completely again and divide the kilometres by the litres. Our mileage calculator does the maths.
Should I use the company's mileage figure?
Better to use your own. Brochure (ARAI) figures come from lab tests and real-world mileage is usually lower, so a trip estimate with the brochure figure comes out too low.
How do I split fuel cost on a shared trip?
Enter the number of people sharing — the calculator shows each person's share of the fuel. Tolls and parking are extra.
Does it work for CNG?
Yes. Choose CNG, enter the mileage in km per kg and the price per kg.
