When to change the air filter: car, bike and scooter

A clogged air filter quietly costs you power and mileage. On dusty Indian roads it clogs faster than the brochure says. Here's when to change it — and the cabin filter that keeps the AC air clean.

Air filter intervals at a glance

FilterChange every (whichever comes first)
Car engine air filter (petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid)20,000 km or 2 years
Car cabin / AC filter15,000 km or 1 year
Motorcycle air filter10,000 km or 1 year
Scooter air filter12,000 km or 1 year
Electric carNo engine air filter — cabin filter only

These are the intervals the MotorBabu app uses, from published Indian schedules. If you drive on unpaved or dusty roads, or near construction, have the filter checked at every service and changed sooner — your owner's manual has the final word.

Signs the air filter is clogged

Changing it yourself

On most cars the engine air filter sits in a black plastic box held by clips — it takes five minutes and no tools. The cabin filter is usually behind the glovebox. Buy the part listed for your exact model and engine, and fit it the right way round (an arrow often shows the airflow). On bikes, the filter is often under the seat or a side panel; foam filters need cleaning and fresh filter oil as per the manual.

Remember it without trying

In MotorBabu, tick "Air filter" or "Cabin / AC filter" when you log a service and the app tracks the km and the months — then reminds you before the next change is due, along with everything else on your vehicle.

Questions people ask

How often should a car air filter be changed?

About every 20,000 km or 2 years for petrol, diesel and CNG cars, whichever comes first — and checked or cleaned at every service. On dusty roads it may need changing sooner.

How often should a bike or scooter air filter be changed?

Around 10,000 km for motorcycles and 12,000 km for scooters, or once a year. Some bikes use paper filters that are replaced; others use foam filters that are cleaned and re-oiled — your manual says which.

What is a cabin air filter?

It cleans the air coming into the car through the AC and fan. A clogged one makes the AC weaker and smelly and lets more dust and pollution in. Change it about every 15,000 km or once a year — more often in polluted cities.

Can I clean a paper air filter and reuse it?

A light tap or a gentle blow from the clean side can help between services, but paper filters are meant to be replaced, not washed. If it's dark, oily or torn, replace it.

Does a dirty air filter reduce mileage?

On older engines and two-wheelers it can noticeably. Modern fuel-injected cars adjust for it, but you'll still feel duller acceleration. It's one of the cheapest parts to replace.
