Bike chain lubrication: how often and how to do it
A clean, lubed and properly adjusted chain makes a bike smoother, quieter and more fuel-efficient — and makes the chain and sprockets last far longer. It takes ten minutes.

Chain care at a glance
| Job | How often |
|---|---|
| Clean and lube the chain | Every 1,000 km, after rain and after a wash |
| Check the slack | Every time you lube it |
| Adjust the slack | When it's outside the range in your manual |
| Replace chain and sprockets | When worn — often 20,000–30,000 km, depends a lot on care |
1,000 km is the interval the MotorBabu app uses. Your owner's manual may say less, especially for off-road or dusty use. Kit life varies widely with how well the chain is looked after.
How to clean and lube a chain at home
- Put the bike on its main stand (or a paddock stand) in neutral, engine off.
- Wipe the chain with a clean cloth, turning the rear wheel slowly by hand. For heavy grime, use a chain cleaner and a soft brush — not petrol.
- Let it dry, then spray lube on the inside of the lower run of the chain, where it meets the sprockets, while turning the wheel.
- Leave it 10–15 minutes (or overnight) so it sinks in, then wipe off the excess so it doesn't fling onto the wheel.
Keep fingers well away from the sprockets, and never run the engine in gear while doing this.
Signs the chain needs attention
- A dry, rusty-looking or noisy chain — clicking or grinding while riding
- Jerky pick-up, or a clunk when you shift or open the throttle
- Too much up-and-down movement midway between the sprockets
- Tight spots: the slack changes as you turn the wheel
- Sprocket teeth that look hooked, sharp or uneven
Remember it without trying
In MotorBabu, tick "Chain lube & adjust" when you do it and the app counts the km — then reminds you at the next 1,000. When the whole kit is changed, tick "Chain & sprocket kit replaced" so your bike's history shows it.
Questions people ask
How often should I lube my bike chain?
About every 1,000 km — and sooner after riding in rain, after washing the bike, or on dusty roads. Many manuals say every 500–1,000 km. MotorBabu reminds you every 1,000 km.
Which lube should I use?
A chain lube or spray made for motorcycle chains. Engine oil works in a pinch but flings off and collects dirt. For O-ring and X-ring chains, use a lube marked safe for them and avoid harsh solvents like petrol.
How tight should a bike chain be?
It needs a little slack — the exact free play is in your owner's manual and often on a sticker on the swingarm. A chain that's too tight wears the gearbox and wheel bearings; too loose and it can jump the sprocket.
When should the chain and sprockets be replaced?
When the chain has stretched so it can't be adjusted any further, has stiff or kinked links, or the sprocket teeth look hooked or pointed. The chain and both sprockets are replaced together as a kit, because a new chain on worn sprockets wears out fast.
Do scooters need chain lubrication?
No — scooters use a CVT belt instead of a chain. The belt and rollers are checked at services and replaced around 20,000 km; MotorBabu tracks that for scooters.
